20 week Full Time Makeup Course
This Full Time Make-up course is the first 20 weeks of our 25 week combined course suitable for those who do not wish to study hair cutting and barbering.
Your time here will be dedicated to training in every aspect of media make-up and hair, including hair and make-up for fashion, TV, film, high definition, wigs, the list goes on and on. See our full course syllabus for details.
Successful students will leave the North West Media Make-up School a good step ahead of the game with a full portfolio, experience of a working TV studio and the best knowledge available in the industry.
This is an intensive full time course. You will also be expected to complete course work outside the college.

Basic make-up Looking at the face, shape, colour, skin type and tone. Application. Bases/powders/concealers etc, eye shapes, eyebrows, lip shapes/colours. Facial contouring. Nude looks, beauty make-up. Make-up for men. Camouflage and corrective make-up. Health and safety
20th Century fashion makeup for TV Film and Photographic
Fashion/Editorial Make-up Fashion and photographic make-up, lighting, Smokey eyes, glamorous Creative looks using materials other than make-up.
High Fashion and Catwalk makeup.
Colour theory, design sheets and portfolio building.
Airbrushing Starting with the basics of cosmetic airbrush work including for high def and moving on to body work/body art.
Week 6, 7, 8
SFX Casualty effects and basic prosthetics Applying material i.e. wax etc, colouring, and finishing. Wounds, dead and alive, Bruising, Illness, death and shock. Skin disease. Scars, tears and sweat. Dirtying down. Basic wounds. Silicone moulding. Applying gelatine prosthetic, colouring and blending. Nose shape changing. Applying and painting prosthetics. Applying eye bags and old age stipple. Ageing with prosthetics. Applying bald caps.
Body Painting Using basic techniques and working up to advanced painting incorporating airbrush
Character Make-up Looking at straight Makeup for men and women in theatre, film and TV. Contouring, character makeup, old age and facial hair. Changing face shapes. Blocking out eyebrows and changing eye shapes. Ageing, theatre and character work using make-up, wigs, bald caps, old age stipple (latex) and facial hair.
Week 10, 11, 12
Period hair and make-up and Wigs 20th Century and historic fashions of hair styling and makeup tecniques including 1920’s-1980’s 18th century, Egiption, Edwardian, Grecian, etc Theory of wigs. Getting hair prepared and ready for a wig. Learning how to do a cling film wrap and measurements to get wigs made. Applying wigs. Applying 3/4 wigs, 1/2 wigs, toupées and wefts, hairpieces. Blocking wigs and general wig care. Knotting. Prepping techniques. Laying on facial hair with loose hair, full chin and moustache. Applying beards, moustaches, eyebrows, sideburns on face. Measurements for having facial hair made. Fitting a lace beard, moustache, sideburns and eye brows. Applying and removing hair extensions.
Week 13, 14, 15
Bridal hair and make-up Techniques used to create amazing flawless looks on brides and the bridal party. Consultation techniques and communications. We believe it is important to know a full range of hair and make-up styles to be able to cater for all clients for a range of events.
Hair Styling for the media
Fashion hair you will learn techniques used on the catwalks and in the fashion industry including hair pads, plaits, backcombing, colours.
Industry studies You will learn all about working on the set of a TV program or film, a photographic studio and theatre production. Working to briefs, mood boards, continuity, set etiquette and Script breakdown. Designing and carrying out full final assesment.
Week 18 – 19
Practice, Design and Portfolio Building a student portfolio of work to submit for final exam and marking. Test paper to be sat and submitted also.
Portfolio You will also work on professional models and with a professional photographer to create several different looks for a professional portfolio. These images will be invaluable when you leave college in order to get work.
On Completion of this Course you will receive a Level 3 VTCT Qualification.
